REBECCA WALKED A COUPLE of blocks away from NBC headquarters and into a food court and retail mall area that occupied most of the first floor of several large interconnected office buildings. She got a latte at a coffee kiosk and found a convenient table out of the traffic flow. She took out her tablet, and within minutes, she had a short email composed to her source. Need to talk ASAP. Please call. She hit the send key.

Within just a few minutes, an email notification popped up on the screen. Will call you at 2 pm. Be where you can talk freely. That was it.

Rebecca looked at the time on her wrist unit. Just past one. Plenty of time to do a little shopping before the call. She got up and headed deeper into the maze of retail stores that formed a rambling mall winding through multiple downtown buildings. She saw her destination up ahead and ducked into the beauty salon as she passed by. This was a full-service salon and had a great selection of wigs.

Within twenty minutes, she had a wig and some makeup that would darken her complexion several shades. Next, she located a dollar store and bought several styles of sunglasses and a couple of large-brimmed floppy hats that would pack down small. Deeper into the mall complex, she found an upscale luggage store, where she purchased a stylish black backpack-and-briefcase combination.

Everything went into the backpack. She would get the remaining items from her closet when she got home. Rebecca congratulated herself on getting her disguise pack together. She had no idea why or when she would ever need it, but she was following the directions she’d been given. She had learned years ago that when in unfamiliar territory, listen to those with more experience.

It was only about ten minutes before two. Rebecca already had a place in mind for the phone conversation. Within a minute she was walking into an Italian restaurant that she knew had a nice enclosed patio area in the back. It would be nearly deserted at this time of day and would provide a private place to take the call. She chose a table in a corner away from the main traffic pattern. The waiter brought water and took her order for a small salad with grilled chicken. At exactly two, the phone rang.

“Hello,” Rebecca answered evenly.

“Hello, Rebecca. It’s Simon. You did a great job last night. Very impressive.”

“I had good material to work with. Information is flooding in, verifying everything you told me about what is really happening. Anecdotal evidence as well as laboratory results are all saying the same thing—people are growing younger. We’re moving ahead full-speed on this story, and you’re the centerpiece. It all revolves around you and Dr. Carston. Are you still prepared to tell your story on air?”

“Ready and anxious, Rebecca. We want to get the full story out, and then we need to get away from this thing. We need to get back to some semblance of our lives before all this happened.
